With 22 sports and almost 400 athletes, Bellarmine Athletic Director Scott Wiegandt has a lot on his plate. Since 2006, Scott has taken over the position of Athletic Director and has been a major influence in the growth of the University athletics. He has aided in the help of developing many new programs at Bellarmine University and has even been a guiding hand in the University’s movement from Division II to Division I.

Wiegandt got an undergrad degree in biology at Bellarmine University where he also played baseball. He earned an All-American status as a senior pitcher and eventually moved to the MLB Draft, where he played eight seasons with the Phillies, one with the Cardinals, and one season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wiegandt was very happy to tell us some stories from his day in the diamond. He then moved to teach at Holy Cross High School here in Louisville. After teaching and coaching at Holy Cross, Scott returned to Bellarmine to coach the baseball team and earn a master’s degree. He remained in the head coaching position for four years before moving to administrative positions. He spent two years as assistant AD then moved to his postion that he has remained in for the past thirteen years. All together, Scott has been a part of the Bellarmine team for around twenty years.

While talking with Wiegandt, he talked to us about some of the major improvements that he has taken charge of during his time as the Athletic Director. One of these new improvements has been the new wrestling facilities. Located at the south side of campus, the new practice gym is 15,000 square feet. There have also been new improvements to locker rooms, team rooms, Knights Hall (which includes a new court, lighting, and a three view camera system), and says that there is more to come.

The key topic in our conversation was the University’s switch from Division II to Division I. Wiegandt was very excited to explain the new transitions that the campus is taking to turn into this new chapter. Before this change, Bellarmine was one of the thirty-two schools that are multi divisional, meaning that some athletes played at a Division I level and some stayed at Division II. Starting in the 2020 school year, all sports will compete in the Division I level.

“The relationships that I have built with the student-athletes here at Bellarmine are for sure my favorite part.” says Scott. He looks forward to the new opportunities that lies before Bellarmine Athletics and the University as a whole.
